Last week, I was chatting with a deeply creative entrepreneur friend about all things creative. We found ourselves diving into a familiar conversation: how so many people don’t make time to create, or believe they aren’t creative at all (I hear this so often).

We also touched on something that lit a fire in both of us: decolonising creativity. We spoke about how the roots of creativity can feel hidden – or even buried – in places like Kenya. These conversations are so rich and multi-layered, and are topics I will be welcoming, alongside practical tips, and deep un-filtered realness from creatives, in my upcoming podcast: Conversations on Creating, which I’ll be launching later in May. I’ll also be looking for guests, so if you are interested I’ll have more details soon.

She also asked me how I create – and how it seems to flow so effortlessly through me. (To be clear: my creativity is definitely cyclical. Right now, I’m in a full-on waterfall phase, so it may look effortless)!

But I shared something I’ve felt deeply for a while: there’s a strong current of creativity I tap into here in Kenya. Maybe you’ve felt something similar in certain places? I remember living in London and feeling like my creative well had dried up. Cooking was the most creative thing I could manage mostly because I could eat the result (hello, years of self-numbing through food).

And then on Vancouver Island in British Columbia a few years ago, I experienced creativity differently: more integrated and embodied, yet more expansive.

Places really do hold creative energy.

Here in Kenya, it’s as though I’m able to drop into something deep – like a current rising up from the Earth itself – and let it move through me. Of course, being open to it is part of it (and it’s taken some alignment work in all areas of my life to be this open, after so many layers of conditioning). Dropping into these unseen spaces is part of my unique artistry. And it’s also how I support others to access their own creative depth.

I truly believe we all have access to this current, and that each of us carries a unique creative essence, a signature that shapes how creativity flows through us. It doesn’t have to show up in a “traditional” way like painting or writing. It might come through in how you go about your day, in how you care for others, what you do when you aren’t working, how you see the world.

After all, we’re all creative beings. We create in every moment, simply by being alive.
